Powell’s network broke even in 18 months and has operated profitably ever since.

Municipal-run broadband providers like EPB would have been able to extend service up to 30 miles outside their service areas.

“How carriers manage their networks should be determined by engineers, entrepreneurs and consumers in the marketplace, not by as few as three unelected commissioners,” said Rep. Walden.

Local Boulder citizens voice their desire for a municipal fiber network.

“It is not anti-competition,” Avila said. “The cities can enter into [broadband service]. It is not going to be easy, though, It’s going to be tough.”

“To bring fiber to the heartland of the country, I appreciate the symbolism,” he said.

“In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community, and develop relationships with local government and community organizations,” Google wrote.
